Instructors in this division teach classes like cardio, zumba, box, step, group strength and other classes we offer in the studio and gyms. Candidates must go through level 1 and level 2 tryouts to qualify. Successful candidates are admitted into our American Council on Exercise Group Fitness Instructor Exam prep course and our mentoring program that runs through the Spring Semester. Here is what we look for:

  1. Have experience in attending fitness classes like cardio, step, etc.
  2. Will be a student on campus through the 2011 academic year.
  3. If you have experience in teaching a fitness class that helps but is not necessary as we provide training.

Sign up for Instructor Tryouts by contacting Lori Devine at devine@recsports.wisc.edu

Guidelines

  1. You will participate in a 30-minute workout led by a Rec Sports Group Fitness Instructor.

  2. You will be given a number to wear on your person to be in clear, visual sight of the evaluation team.

  3. The workout will consist of a warm-up, a cardiovascular segment, flexibility and floor conditioning.

  4. You will be evaluated on the following criteria (view the evaluation form - PDF):
    • Your body alignment and form
    • Your ability to keep to the rhythm of the music
    • Your ability to change moves when cues are given
    • Your ability to physically complete the evaluation
    • Your enthusiasm/ body language

  5. If you are selected to participate in the second level of tryouts, you will be notified by e-mail within 10 days of the November 1, 2009 tryout event.

  6. Level 2 tryouts are scheduled for Sunday, November 15th. This tryout consists of you leading a group of your peers in a 12-15 minute workout. A CD of music will be loaned to you to use for your audition (Level 2). You will have to identify an eight count move and a 32 count phrase in the music and develop moves to follow that pattern. The Fitness Director will schedule an interview and prep session with you prior to November 15th. At the interview, you will be given an informational handout, indicating what you are to do for the second try-out, and how you will be evaluated.
