The Intramural Sports program provides UW-Madison students, faculty and staff an opportunity to experience competition as an individual or as a member of an organized group; to accept winning as well as losing and to respond to both with appropriate conduct; to develop a sense of sportsmanship and esprit de corps.
The most important aspect of a game is the human relationships that are created between people who play together and the people who officiate. Those who play for its own sake are the real winners because the prize is the play. Active participation by students, faculty and staff as players and student officials are integral to the success of the intramural sports program.
Note: Every effort is made to keep the most current information and policies posted on this web site.

If you do not have the roster completed, please e-mail the names and ID numbers to the IM Webmaster at imsports@recsports.wisc.edu.
The Intramural Sports staff reserves the right to alter an intramural team name if it is judged to be obscene, derogatory, vulgar, offensive, contains profanity, or is not within the spirit of good sportsmanship. The team will not be entered officially until the name is suitable to the Intramural Sports staff.

It is very important that each team submit their roster with complete name and ID number at the time of registration. To view the schedules, standings and rosters, please click on the Schedules link followed by the Sport – Leagues – Day/Time of League on the Intramural Sports web page. To view the roster, click on the Team Name in the League schedules.

The team captain is a vital link between the Intramural Sports staff and the team. Only those students who have the ability to organize a group should be appointed to serve in this role. The captain or designee must enter the team at the designated time and facility. The captain should also check the results posted on the web site to ensure proper win/loss records and roster. If your results are not posted correctly, please contact the Intramural Sports Webmaster at imsports@recsports.wisc.edu .
The team captain will be responsible for any forfeit fees the team incurs. Recreational Sports may place a hold on the captain's record until the forfeit fee is paid. The team captain is responsible for obtaining schedule and any other pertinent information from the Intramural Sports web site as well as ensuring the team abides by the Intramural Sports Policies. The captain and team members are also responsible for reading the rules and notes for the respective sport. The notes will give you specific information pertaining to that sport. The notes do not replace the full version of the Intramural Sports Policies. The captain or designee is not required to attend every game.
If you are looking for extra players, please check the Free Agent list located on the Intramural Sports web site.

Team sign-ups for league play will be instantly scheduled. This means you will know the day and time you play every week when you register except the summer session. Instant scheduling is conducted on a first-come first-serve basis. If you wish to change a day or time after you register, it may not be available. Your team may have to move to another league if the league does not have enough teams.
Team tournament entries will be collected in the order they are received. Please rank, in order, the days that are best for your team to play. Every effort will be made to meet those requests but teams are expected to play as scheduled due to the tournament format.
To view the schedules and standings, please click on Schedules – Sport – Sport on the Left - Leagues – Day/Time of League on the Intramural Sports web page.
For specified events, individuals will be responsible for scheduling and completing their match before the posted deadline. If you cannot reach your opponent, please contact the Intramural Sports webmaster at imsports@recsports.wisc.edu or the Intramural Sports Staff at (608) 890-1793. The winner must report the results to the Natatorium office (262-3742) or webmaster at imsports@recsports.wisc.edu. Those winners that do not report their score before the deadline will forfeit the contest and be eliminated from further competition. A $5.00 no show fee will be charged.

There are two divisions offered – Competitive and Recreational. For some sports, an ‘Open’ league will be the only division as the amount of space available and number of teams dictate only one league offering. The competitive division is intended for those teams that have had some experience with organized play in that sport. The competitive division will play to earn the All-Campus Champion title. The recreational league is intended for those that play for fun and enjoyment. The competitive league champions will each receive Intramural Sports championship t-shirts and then be given the opportunity to compete for the All-Campus Champion title. The recreational and open league champion will also receive an IM champ t-shirt.

During regular season (league) play, teams may add players to their roster by adding the player’s name and ID number to the bottom of the score sheet or e-mailing the IM Webmaster. Teams have until the last game of the regular season to add players to their roster. After the completion of the last game, names will not be added to the roster. Only those names on the roster will be allowed to play during the playoffs. Please remember to print legibly. It is the captain and individual’s responsibility to ensure the correct names are listed on the roster before playoffs begin. The team roster is online and may be checked at anytime.
To view the rosters, click on the Schedules – Sport – Sport on Left - Leagues – Day/Time of League – Team Name on the Intramural Sports web page.
For tournament play, a team roster is determined after the first game is played. Player additions may not be made after the completion of the first game. To view tournament rosters, click on Schedules – Sport – Sport on Left – Leagues – Division – Team Name on the Intramural Sports web page.
Those players that participate in the playoffs and are not listed on the team roster will result in your team forfeiting the contest and will be eliminated from further competition.

- Team Sports: Twenty people
- Individual Sports (1 on 1): One person
- Dual Sports (2 on 2): Three people
- Special Events: Roster number will be specified.

In 5 or 6 team leagues, a team must have a .500 record or better to make the playoffs. In 4 or less team leagues, a team must win 1 game to make the playoffs. All playoff teams must have less than 2 forfeits, 3 defaults, 2 no shows or any combination of the above to qualify for the playoffs. Any team not given the opportunity to play 50% or more of their regularly scheduled games (ex. games cancelled due to rain, etc. not including forfeits/no shows/defaults/cancellations) will be placed into the playoffs. Recreational Sports staff reserves the right to reclassify any team after completion of the regular season.
Teams are expected to play when scheduled. Days and times are likely to be different than the regular season. If there is a day that your team cannot play, please contact the Intramural Sports staff prior to the end of regular season play. The staff will make an effort to accommodate your request if possible.

Regular season games will not be rescheduled. Playoff games will only be rescheduled due to conflicts with other IM sports activities and academic conflicts (class, lab, exam) that result in a team not having the minimum number required to start the game. Teams wishing to request a game be rescheduled, must submit a Reschedule Request Form to the Nat Rec Sports office (Nat 1180) by noon the day prior to the game. For Sunday and Monday games, this form must be submitted by noon the Friday before the game. Requests submitted after the deadline or without adequate documentation of conflict will not be accepted. Adequate documentation for academic conflicts includes the class number for a class or lab meeting or a copy of the course syllabus listing exam times for an exam. Adequate documentation for other IM sport activities will consist of listing the exact sport, team name, and league of the conflicting game. Please look ahead in your brackets to see potential conflicts in later rounds. The Intramural Sports Program may make exceptions to this policy in cases where brackets are not posted until after the reschedule deadline.

Recreational Sports hires students to officiate all intramural sports contests. Please remember they are your peers. The Intramural Sports program would not be able to function without the willingness of students to officiate. If you think you would like to officiate, please fill out an online application or talk to the Intramural Sports Coordinator in Room 1180 Natatorium for the sport you are interested. Training is provided.
Please remember that the officials have authority before, during and after the game. Intramural Sports Supervisors may rule if a question arises or a protest is properly lodged.

Some of the Recreational Sports outdoor facilities are currently under construction. During this time, we ask that all participants cooperate with Recreational Sports by following the posted signs and not climb the fences. We also ask that when an activity is canceled due to inclement weather to follow our request. Damage that is done to the activity space impacts not only your team but the entire Intramural Sports program, Club Sports program and the campus community. One hour of playing in the mud can ruin an entire field for 2-3 years. Please help us to preserve the limited amount of outdoor space that is available to us for our programs.

All participants are required to wear to appropriate attire for the event. For all sports, shirts/jerseys, shorts/pants and shoes covering the top and bottom of the foot must be worn at all times. Jersey Policy:
Matching colored team shirts will be required in all variations of basketball and flag football, soccer, ultimate frisbee, flag football, floor hockey, broomball, and dodgeball. Teams will have the opportunity to select a team color during the registration process of the sport. The team is required to have all players wear the same share of color to every game. Any player not wearing their team’s jersey color will not be allowed to play.
Intramural Sports acknowledges that there are cases in which t-shirt colors may not match exactly. We will attempt to include all participants while maintaining the integrity of the game. The Intramural Supervisor has the discretion to allow a participant to play when their t-shirt shade does not exactly match their teammates.
Exceptions:
Ice Hockey participants must wear light or dark jerseys as outlined in the Ice Hockey team rules.
Basketball participants must wear numbered jerseys as outlined in all variations of Basketball rules.
Jewelry is not permitted. The National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) rules concerning jewelry will be followed. Med-Alert bracelets or necklaces must be taped to the body.

The UW-Madison Division of Recreational Sports (Rec Sports) offers a variety of programs for individual and group athletic activity. Programs involve strenuous physical activity and rigorous exertion, including, but not limited to, intramural sports, personal training, aerobic dance and exercise, weight training, stationary bicycling and the use of various aerobic-conditioning machinery found at the SERF, Camp Randall Shell, the Natatorium and Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Rec Sports offers a variety of classes for physical activity and instruction. In addition, staff is available at each location to assist people on an individual basis and answer questions.
Participants must understand that these activities are potentially hazardous and that fitness and athletic activities involve a risk of injury and even death. Risks include, but are not limited to heart attacks, muscle strains, pulls or tears, broken bones, shin splints, heat prostration, knee/lower back/foot injuries, and drowning, to name but a few. Participants must be in sufficient physical condition to accept a rigorous level of physical activity. Anyone with questions in this area is advised to contact their personal physician.
Participants must also understand that the University does not provide blanket medical coverage to students, staff or visitors and that the University strongly encourages participants to carry health insurance that provides comprehensive medical and emergency room coverage. Participants must agree to abide by the instructions, rules and regulations for the specific activity as indicated by Rec Sports. Furthermore, participants agree to be considerate of fellow athletes and to conduct themselves in a safe and responsible manner. Participants use the facilities voluntarily and are responsible for their own health and safety.

Playoffs: In order to participate in the playoffs, a person must be listed on the team roster by the conclusion of the final regular season contest. A listing of your team roster is available online.

Team Sports
If an entire team fails to check-in with the supervisor or official at the scheduled location within 10 minutes of the scheduled time of the contest, the official or supervisor will declare the contest a NO SHOW and will cause the following to take place:
- The team must pay $25.00 to the Recreational Sports Program Office where the sport sign-up took place within 48 hours of the contest.
- The team will be dropped from the league if the fee is not paid within 48 hours of the contest. Even if the team is dropped, the fee must still be paid. NOTE: A hold will be placed on the captain’s academic record until the fee is paid.
- If a team forfeits and pays the fee during the regular season, it will count as a loss. The team may still qualify for the playoffs.
- Any team that does not show during tournament play will be automatically dropped from the tournament and responsible for the $25 fee.
- If a team pays the fee and does not show again for the second time, the team will automatically be dropped from further competition and responsible for another $25 fee.

- The defaulting team must pay $10.00 to the Recreational Sports Program Office where the sport sign-up took place within 48 hours of the contest.
- The team will be dropped from the league if the fee is not paid within 48 hours of the contest. Even if the team is dropped, the fee must still be paid. NOTE: A hold will be placed on the captain’s academic record until the fee is paid.
- A team may default and pay the fee twice during the regular season. Each default will count as a loss. The team may still qualify for the playoffs. After the third default, the team will be automatically dropped from the league and responsible for the fee.
- Any team that defaults during tournament play will be automatically dropped from the tournament and responsible for the $10.00 fee.
Exceptions: Dodgeball will have an 8 minute grace period.
3 on 3 Basketball will have a 5 minute grace period.

When a team or teams fail to show for a scheduled contest the focus on participation of intramural sports is negated and operational costs are still incurred. The NO SHOW and DEFAULT fee is designed to further discourage no shows and recuperate expenses.

Eligibility – Protests concerning player eligibility must be made to the Intramural Sports Supervisor before, during, or immediately after the contest in question. The Recreational Sports staff will make a ruling on the protest the following day. NOTE: No protests will be considered if the above procedures are not followed.
Rule Interpretation – Protests involving rule interpretations will be considered on the field or court immediately following the incident in question. The protesting team must request a timeout at which point the official will suspend play and summon the Intramural Sports Supervisor to the game site. Play should not continue until the supervisor renders a decision. If a decision cannot be made, the game may continue under protest and the Intramural Sports Staff will make a decision the next morning. NOTE: If a team continues to play without calling a timeout and calling the Intramural Sports supervisor to the game site, the team forfeits their right to a protest.
Judgment Calls – Questions about an intramural official’s judgment are not valid grounds for a protest.

If a question concerning player eligibility or official’s interpretation of playing rules cannot be resolved at the playing site, a written protest must be filed with the Recreational Sports Office through the following procedure:
- Protests concerning rule interpretation must be made at the time of occurrence. Protests concerning player eligibility must be made prior to the start of, or during, the first dead ball of the game.
- The protest is to be made to the game official. The team must call a time out. The official will then announce to both team captains that the game is being played under protest and beckon the Intramural Sports Supervisor.
- The official shall consult the Intramural Sports Supervisor who will attempt to rectify the situation prior to the resumption of play. If a judgment is arrived at in favor of the protesting team, the delay will be considered an official’s time out. If the protest is not upheld, a charged time out will be assessed to the protesting team. If they are out of time outs, another penalty will be imposed if necessary by rule.
- If the situation cannot be rectified at the time of occurrence, the protest procedure should be continued.
- All protests not resolved at time of occurrence must be detailed completely on a Recreational Sports Protest form that can be obtained from the IM Supervisor.
- Protests lodged after the conclusion of a game WILL NOT be honored.
- The protest form must be turned in to the Nat Recreational Sports Office by noon the next business day following the occurrence.
- Both team captains must contact the Intramural Sports Director by 12:00 pm (noon) the following day to discuss the incident with the Intramural Sports Staff. Failure to report by this time voids the right to protest. A decision will be made within 24 hours of this meeting given all the information has been obtained.
- Appeals to the decision may be submitted in writing to the Director of Recreational Programs (Room 273 SERF). The appeal must be submitted before 4:30 pm the next regular work day following the institution of the penalty. During the period of the appeal, the penalty shall remain in effect.
